Summary of Bill S 244

Bill 119 s 244, also known as the "Consumer Router Security Act," is a proposed piece of legislation that aims to address the national security risks associated with consumer routers, modems, and devices that combine a modem and router. The bill directs the Secretary of Commerce, specifically through the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information, to conduct a comprehensive study on these devices and the potential threats they pose to national security.

The study will focus on identifying the specific risks posed by consumer routers, modems, and combination devices, as well as evaluating the current security measures in place to mitigate these risks. The goal of the study is to provide policymakers with a better understanding of the vulnerabilities in these devices and to recommend potential solutions to enhance their security.

In addition to conducting the study, the bill also includes provisions for the Secretary of Commerce to collaborate with other federal agencies, industry stakeholders, and cybersecurity experts to gather information and expertise on this issue. The bill emphasizes the importance of protecting the nation's critical infrastructure and ensuring the security of consumer devices that are widely used in homes and businesses. Overall, the Consumer Router Security Act seeks to address the growing concerns surrounding the security of consumer routers, modems, and combination devices, and to develop strategies to better protect against potential national security threats.
